Cabras and its lagoon
A town on the shore of one of the largest lagoons in Europe, known for fish and bottarga.
About the place
The Cabras lagoon covers about 2,200 hectares and is a Ramsar site, a Site of Community Importance and a Special Protection Area. Fishing here is mostly for grey mullet, which is the basis of bottarga, the town's best-known speciality.
Many birds stop at the lagoon, flamingos included. On the first weekend of September the town holds the Corsa degli Scalzi, when men in white tunics run barefoot carrying the statue of San Salvatore for about 7 km.
