Oristano: old town and the Sartiglia
Once the capital of the Giudicato of Arborea, it has a compact old centre that is easy to explore on foot.
About the place
The heart of town lies between Piazza Duomo, Piazza Eleonora with its statue of Eleonora of Arborea, and Piazza Roma with the tower. The cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is documented from 1131; it is Baroque in style, with an octagonal bell tower topped by a majolica-tiled dome.
The Tower of Mariano II, dated 1290, was the north gate of the old walls and is built from sandstone blocks salvaged from Tharros. At Carnival the city hosts the Sartiglia, a mounted joust held on the last Sunday of Carnival and on Shrove Tuesday.
